What is NDT?

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) involves inspecting and testing materials and parts without causing any destruction. The field of Nondestructive Testing, also known as Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) or Nondestructive Inspection (NDI), is a critical industry that plays an often overlooked but always necessary role in assuring that structural components and systems perform their functions in a reliable and cost-effective fashion. NDT technicians conduct tests in a variety of environments to identify and locate defects that could potentially cause pressure vessels to rupture, pipelines to burst, structures to fail, and a variety of other less catastrophic but equally damaging events. These tests are performed in a manner that doesn’t affect the materials’ ability to be utilized or put in service. There are several types of NDT inspections and techniques, each used for specific types of machinery. NDT testing methods and NDT inspection techniques are all vital components to making industries safe and cost-effective.

TEXAS NDT ACADEMY

Cutting-Edge NDT Training.

One of the most challenging aspects of starting a career in the world of Nondestructive Testing is gaining the practical experience needed to become a productive inspector in the field. Many employers prefer hiring personnel who already possess hands-on experience and familiarity with inspection equipment, procedures, and reporting requirements.

TXNDT Labs was created to help bridge the gap between classroom training and field experience.

The TXNDT Lab provides aspiring inspectors, trainees, and working professionals with opportunities to develop practical skills, gain supervised experience, and build confidence using real equipment and real-world inspection scenarios. Whether you are pursuing experience in Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), or Visual Testing (VT), TXNDT Labs offers access to a wide variety of equipment, reference standards, and test specimens.

Under the supervision of TXNDT's instructors, participants can work on:

  • Equipment setup and calibration
  • Inspection planning and execution
  • Evaluation of indications
  • Application of codes, standards, and procedures
  • Documentation and report preparation
  • Development of practical inspection skills

As of ASNT SNT-TC-1A (2024), a limited amount of experience obtained in a laboratory environment may be creditable toward qualification requirements where permitted by the employer's Written Practice and applicable certification program. TXNDT Labs provides a valuable opportunity to reinforce classroom learning, develop hands-on skills, and gain practical experience in a controlled environment.

Our goal is simple: help develop competent inspectors who are better prepared for the realities of the field.

The TXNDT Lab is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM with after-hours and weekend access available upon request.
