According to CIO, while women make up nearly half of all employed adults in the United States, there is a significant disparity when it comes to the jobs held by women in the tech sector. In fact, as reported by The National Center for Women & Information Technology roughly a quarter of STEM jobs are held by women. Despite this-- and indeed in response to this--more women than ever are educating themselves to enter into the STEM field as future engineers, IT professionals, and other technicians.
More and more, companies in all sectors are recognizing the value of a diverse staff. Time and time again, companies that prioritize diversity tend to perform much higher than their counterparts who do not. Especially in a field that is historically male-dominated, NDT professionals all over are pushing for more women to enter the field.
The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) has created an award for this exact purpose. “The Advancement of Women in NDT Recognition distinguishes individuals or organizations who encourage women to enter and thrive in the field of NDT, either through creation and/or implementation of programs that provide educational and/or career advancement opportunities in NDT that may not otherwise be available to women or through leading by example of how women can not only have a career in NDT but also contribute greatly to NDT, ASNT, and to creating a safer world.”
The highly-skilled professionals who have received this recognition are perfect examples of people helping to make the NDT field as diverse as possible. In a field like NDT, critical thinking is key to performing your job well. As most professionals can attest, having a variety of viewpoints at your disposal is invaluable. These diverse viewpoints help to enrich your view of the world and see things in ways you may not have considered previously. In life and in NDT, a complex and nuanced viewpoint is necessary to perform your best every step of the way.
The increase in women entering into the NDT field is a trend we hope increases at TXNDT and we want to do our part to support this crucial development.
