If you’ve ever had an internship or entry-level job, you know how critical it is to have supervised experience to help prepare you for a future career. Training manuals and onboarding classes can be beneficial, but nothing compares to the guided practice of hands-on experience with a qualified supervisor.

At TXNDT, we prioritize hands-on experience for all of our students so that our technicians enter the field with a deep understanding of how to perform their job and what to expect in real world scenarios. At TXNDT, you can trust that you will work with qualified instructors who are well-versed in the various methods of nondestructive testing, while you also work with various types of equipment so that you understand exactly what to do in the field after graduation.

Here are some examples of the equipment you can expect to use during your training with TXNDT and in the field.

What Parts and Equipment NDT Technicians Need

NDT Equipment

Depending on an asset's needs, the methods of testing will vary in the nondestructive testing field. The necessary equipment will change from asset to asset as well. For methods such as visual testing, you may be instructed to simply look at an asset or do something as elaborate as using a drone to capture images. Visual testing is a fairly uncomplicated method and therefore does not require much equipment.

Some other methods, however, are much more involved and can require complex equipment that technicians must be familiar with to use in a way that will yield accurate results. Without proper training, technicians run the risk of inaccurately assessing a component’s safety and putting people at significant risk.

The types of equipment you can expect to practice with while training at TXNDT are:

  • Ultrasonic transducers

  • Hardness testers

  • Various flaw detectors

  • Micrometers

  • Magnetic thickness gauges

  • Ultrasonic thickness gauges

  • ...and more

However, these are only a few of the physical instruments you will use while conducting nondestructive testing. During your training, you will work with your instructor to determine which testing method and specific equipment is right for every job.

In addition to physical tools and parts, it is paramount to understand the software associated with the various testing methods. Often, a particular tool or machine will have specific software for reading and storing information gleaned from testing a component. It is important that the technician knows how to read and interpret the information from that software to properly assess the information for each test performed. TXNDT also implements this into the syllabus so all students are capable of making the right call in the field.
