Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
Magnetic Particle Testing uses magnetic fields to locate surface and near surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as steel. The Magnetic field can be applied using various direct and indirect techniques such as Yokes, Prods, and Coils or through the use of a central conductor. Magnetic Particle equipment varies from portable, semi-portable to stationary and can be customized to be used for a variety of inspection needs. Magnetic Particle inspection uses a fine pigmented ferromagnetic powder which, when applied to the surface of the part, will be drawn into the magnetic leakage field caused by a discontinuity causing a visible indication.
Advantages of Magnetic Particle Testing techniques:
- Relative low cost
- Ease of inspection
- Inspects irregular shapes with ease
Disadvantages of Magnetic Particle Testing:
- Must de-magnetize in some situations
- Only surface and very near surface indications may be seen
- Material/Part being tested must be ferromagnetic
