Almost everyone believes in the value of a great education. There’s a reason that schools like Harvard, Oxford, and Yale have such great reputations and the mere mention of association with one of these institutions can be a ticket to success.

When an institution is known for rigorous, high quality training, it is expected that students leave with all of the expertise the institution has to offer.

While there is no “Ivy League” of nondestructive testing training centers, there are a few sure signs of a high quality ndt training. Here are the 4 things to look for in a nondestructive testing and training center.

Quality Educators

All of the books and training manuals in the world are worth nothing without the proper guidance. When you’re looking for an ndt training center, check out their instructors first.

The best instructor will have the highest level of NDT certification and be experienced in a variety of testing methods.

At TXNDT, we take pride in the skill and integrity of all of our instructors, especially our lead instructor Garrett Ehler.

Mr. Ehler is a graduate of Baylor University with degrees in Environmental Science and Psychology. He has years of experience in heavy construction and utility industries, qualifying him as an instructor with a full range of background experiences.

Not only is Ehler fully qualified as an NDT technician himself, his experiences and credentials give him a unique perspective that informs his spectacular teaching.

Variety of Methods

When technicians enter the field, they learn quickly that each job is a little bit different. While the expansive fields that nondestructive testing can serve makes for an exciting career, it also means that being prepared is crucial for being a great NDT technician.

Always be sure that your NDT training center offers a wide variety of testing methods for certification.

From visual testing, to magnetic particle testing, to ultrasonic testing, each technician needs a full “bag of tricks” to be prepared for whatever challenges each unique job may present.

Levels of Certification

In the nondestructive testing field, there are a number of different levels of certification, including the following:

  • Level I Limited and Level I: the lowest level of NDT certification, at this level, technicians are learning the basics of nondestructive testing and conducting tests under close supervision
  • Level II: at this level, technicians have more experience, are familiar with how to prepare for and conduct various nondestructive tests, and can supervise less experienced technicians
  • NDT Level III Certification: Technicians at this level are highly skilled and serve as supervisors and instructors, as well as experienced technicians.

A great ndt training and testing facility will have options for reaching each of these levels to fully prepare technicians.

Hands-On Experience

Any NDT technician can tell you that books and lectures will only get you so far. Being educated and well-versed in your subject is great, but book smarts alone won’t help you once you’re in the field.

A technician needs to have hands-on experience to fully understand all of the different variables and intricacies of nondestructive testing.
